It was a sad, yet momentous day on October 12, 2012. The U.S. Space Shuttle Endeavour was being retired after 20 long years of service ferrying astronauts into orbit and back again. It ran dozens of missions, but after the tragic loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003, NASA believed it was wise to play it safe, and set a date to phase out its older shuttles before any signs of aging could create a hazard -- the same way you replace your old cars.

The shuttle's wistful retirement offered a deep honor for Toyota, however....

In case you missed it, a little over a month ago, Toyota issued a press release announcing that MIT Technology Review named the automaker one of the smartest companies in the world. The 2007 Toyota Tundra was one of the first trucks assembled exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, which operates right here in San Antonio. Little did anyone know at the time, one of those pickups would exceed 1 million miles on the odometer in just nine years.

When you imagine an American-made car, you might think of one of the Detroit-based automakers... but for the second consecutive year, the number-one model on the American-Made Index is the Toyota Camry.

The be listed on the AMI requires a model to be assembled exclusively in the United States, and made out of parts manufactured in the United States (at least 75 percent). Only eight models qualified this year, and...
