If a new Toyota's safety rating is important to you, it's good to know where it stands. Vehicles don't make it to the road unless they meet certain safety standards, but some Toyota models exceed the usual requirements and excel where others do not. Every year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety puts vehicles through rigorous crash testing to see which ones deserve the TOP SAFETY PICK+ qualification.

How does a vehicle earn TOP SAFETY PICK+ qualification?

To earn the right to be called a TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the IIHS, a vehicle must meet several criteria:

  • Earn a "good" rating in five IIHS crash tests (these assess passenger protection from multiple angles in the event of a collision)
  • Earn an "advanced" or "superior" rating for frontal collision prevention (the vehicle must be equipped with a Frontal-Collision Warning System with automatic braking to qualify)
  • Earn an "acceptable" or "good" headlight rating

Which Toyota models qualify for TOP SAFETY PICK+?
