The 2007 Toyota Tundra was one of the first trucks assembled exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, which operates right here in San Antonio. Little did anyone know at the time, one of those pickups would exceed 1 million miles on the odometer in just nine years.
Victor Sheppard, a long-time Toyota loyalist, travels regularly from his home in Louisiana to Virginia, North Dakota, and Wyoming for his job. Reliability is important to him because he racks up about 125,000 miles every year -- mileage that would take the average driver at least 10 years to reach.
Sheppard says he always drives a Tundra because they hold up so well over time. "My truck looks great," he said, "and, except for a few little dents, it's almost like new. Even the seats look just as they were when I bought it. They're not as clean, of course, but they're not busted or worn out."
This year, he surpassed the million-mile mark, and Toyota traded him for a brand new Tundra. However, the trade was one part loyalty reward. The other part was so Toyota Technical Center engineers could examine the staggeringly high-mileage truck. It represents an invaluable opportunity to gain insight that could be applied to future products.
"Having a million-mile truck in as pristine condition as this one with original parts is a truly rare find," said chief truck engineer Mike Sweers. "Our team plans to tear down the entire truck, bumper-to-bumper, top-to-bottom to evaluate how the quality and safety we designed, engineered and built into the Tundra has held up to over one-million miles of real-world driving and help us continue providing ever-better vehicles for our customers."
