In case you missed it, a little over a month ago, Toyota issued a press release announcing that MIT Technology Review named the automaker one of the smartest companies in the world. Toyota ranked 17th on the publication's list of "50 Smartest Companies," placing among technology leaders such as Amazon.com, Facebook. The company even ranked ahead of long-established and well-respected global brands like Microsoft, IBM, and Intel. According to the press release, when considering companies for inclusion on the list, editors evaluated how the businesses combined innovative technology with an effective business model.
“We’re very grateful to be recognized by MIT, one of the finest educational institutions in the world,” said Jim Lentz, chief executive officer of Toyota Motor North America. “Toyota’s scientists are committed to innovation and leading the way to a future of mobility that is cleaner, safer, and provides freedom of mobility for all. In the spirit of kaizen, Toyota is committed to improving every day in the service of our customers and society.”
MIT Technology Review editors lauded Toyota's launch of its R&D arm, the Toyota Research Institute, which aims to study the future of mobility, artificial intelligence, and robotics. The magazine also praised Toyota's efforts in developing a network of hydrogen fuel stations that are accessible and reliable in support of the Mirai hydrogen fuel vehicle. One of the world's first mass-market vehicles of its kind, the Mirai has a range of more than 300 with zero emissions.
