The newest version of Toyota's famous hybrid, the Prius, is due out in early 2016. This morning we learned some exciting information regarding the advanced technologies that will be featured in the 2016 model.

In an October 13 press release, it was revealed that the new Prius is expected to gain a 10 percent increase in fuel efficiency, giving it the highest fuel economy rating of any vehicle without a plug. Here are some highlights of the announcement:

  • The Prius retains its 1.8-liter VVT-i engine, but it has been redesigned to achieve 40 percent thermal efficiency.
  • Hybrid components, such as the electric motor, transaxle, battery, and power control unit were redesigned to be smaller. This allows for a greater power-to-weight ratio, and an increase in cargo capacity.
  • Drive experience is improved thanks to the Toyota New Global Architecture chassis.
  • The available Toyota Safety Sense package includes a pre-collision system, and a pedestrian detection system.

We don't know exactly when the new Prius will be available, but as soon as we do, you can be sure we'll let you know.
